I'm Feeling Overwhelmed
Conversation 01
A quiet conversation for the days when everything feels like too much.
Pull up a chair
You don’t need to sort anything out yet.
You don’t need a better routine, a new plan, or a list of things you should be doing differently.
For a moment, you can just be here.
Because sometimes overwhelm isn’t really about having too much to do.
Sometimes it’s what happens when you’ve been holding too much for too long.
Too many things to remember.
Too many people needing something from you.
Too many decisions.
Too many thoughts running quietly in the background.
And eventually, even the smallest thing can feel like one thing too many.
So before we try to make anything better, let’s work out what you’re actually carrying.
Tell me what feels heavy.
Don’t organise it.
Don’t decide whether it’s important enough.
Just think about everything that has been taking up space in your head lately.
What are you carrying right now?
Maybe it’s work.
Money.
Your children.
A relationship.
Your body.
Something you need to decide.
Something you’re waiting for.
Someone you’re worried about.
Or perhaps there isn’t one obvious thing at all.
Perhaps life simply feels full.
Take a moment here.
Now, a different question.
Of everything you just thought about:
What actually needs your attention today?
Not this week.
Not eventually.
Not everything you feel responsible for.
Today.
There may be far less on that list than your mind has been telling you.
And whatever isn't on it?
For now, let it wait.
You are allowed to put something down without abandoning it.
What are you carrying that isn’t yours?
Sometimes the weight isn’t even ours.
Someone else’s mood.
Someone else’s expectations.
Keeping everyone happy.
Making sure nobody is disappointed.
Trying to fix something that isn’t yours to fix.
Being the one who remembers, organises, anticipates and holds everything together.
We can become so used to carrying these things that we stop noticing we’re doing it.
So look again at what’s on your mind and ask:
Does all of this actually belong to me?
If it doesn’t, you don’t have to keep carrying it simply because you always have.
You can put it down.
And if it is yours, how much of what you're carrying hasn't happened yet?
This is worth noticing.
When we're overwhelmed, our minds don't only carry what is happening.
They carry what might happen too.
What if this goes wrong?
What if I can't manage it?
What if they say no?
What if I make the wrong decision?
What if things don't work out?
And suddenly we're not dealing with one difficult moment.
We're dealing with ten imaginary versions of the future as well.
So take one of the things you're worrying about and ask:
Is this happening right now, or am I imagining what might happen?
If it's happening, perhaps it needs your attention.
If it hasn't happened yet, you don't have to solve it today.
That doesn't mean ignoring reality.
It means refusing to live through a difficult moment before you know whether it's yours to live through at all.
Be careful what you rehearse.
Your thoughts matter.
Not because every thought magically becomes reality.
But because the thoughts you return to shape the way you experience your life.
If you repeatedly tell yourself:
I can't cope.
Everything is going wrong.
There's too much.
I don't know how I'm going to do this.
Your mind begins looking for evidence that you're right.
Your body responds to the story too.
Everything starts to feel heavier.
So we're not going to replace reality with:
Everything is amazing.
You wouldn't believe it anyway.
Instead, try giving your mind something equally true, but more useful:
Instead, try something you can actually believe.
Maybe that's enough. Or perhaps it's: I've handled difficult days before. I can deal with the next thing when it arrives.
You don't have to convince yourself that everything is wonderful. Just stop automatically assuming that everything is going to go wrong.
Notice the difference.
We're not pretending.
We're choosing what we give our attention to and that changes how we experience what's in front of us.
Come back to today.
Not the whole month.
Not the entire problem.
Not how you're going to fix everything.
Just today.
What would make today feel 10% lighter?
Not perfect.
Not productive.
Not completely under control.
Just lighter.
Perhaps there’s one thing you can cancel.
One decision you can postpone.
One person you can ask for help.
One thing you can stop trying to do perfectly.
Or perhaps you simply need an hour in which nobody needs anything from you.
Choose one.
Small is enough.
Before you get up...
Your life may look exactly the same as it did ten minutes ago.
But perhaps you're looking at it differently.
Not everything needs you today.
Not every thought deserves to be believed.
Not every possibility needs to be prepared for.
Not everything you're carrying belongs to you.
And you don't need to know how everything turns out before you allow yourself to feel okay now.
Take what is yours. Deal with what is real. Let tomorrow arrive before you start living it.
The rest can stay here for a while.
The chair will still be here when you come back.
One thing to take with you
I do not have to carry everything at once.
